Singapore Bar-Disco

Singapore after dark is a city of contrasts - sizzling hot and relaxingly chilled out. Sundown is one of the most captivating and seductive times of this busy nation. Watch the buzz of city mellow and meld with the crimson hue of the evening. Our city lights signal the start of a great night ahead.

For the serious party animal, your night is not complete without a visit to the Tourism Award winners of “Best Nightspots 2004”, each with their individual eccentric experience: Thumper at Scotts Road is the place to be seen – and heard. Bar hanging, terrace schmoozing, late-night dancing – Thumper is truly a party bar. New Asia Bar & Grill at Raffles City gets you high – literally.

If partying 71 floors above the ground doesn’t sweep you off your feet, the chocolate-flavoured cocktails will. A hot favourite among executives and expatriates, Bar None is the epitome of contemporary and rock ‘n roll. Or for an out-of-this-world experience, the underwater theme Aquadisiac is a playground for the wild and wacky. And who can forget the iconic Zouk which won the "Best Nightspot Experience for 2005"? With clubs, a wine bar and blistering live bands, Zouk is a household name for party!

Boat Quay

After a long day in Singapore's Shenton Way business district, office executives just walk over to Boat Quay to party and unwind the night away.

There's quite a mix of nightspots occupying the beautifully restored 19th-century shophouses; there're chill-out spots such as Q-Bar, jazz at Harry's and beer pubs like Molly Malone's; something for everyone and anyone. It really is the People's river, and this is where you get to see different locals, expatriates and travellers mixing and partying together.

On the other side of the river is Empress Place. With the Parliament House, Victoria Concert Hall and Theatre around it, Empress Place is the place for quiet, classy, high-end waterfront dining.

These entertainment establishments commonly open in the evening till late at night. Please call the respective outlets or visit their website (if available) for more information.

Holland Village
For a bohemian experience in Singapore, visit Holland Village - the perfect locale for a laid-back night-out in a charming blend of old and new.

From the 1930's to the withdrawal of the British in the 1970's, Holland Village has always been a centre for expatriates. This has reached a comfortable balance with the increased local patronage. The quaint appeal of Holland Village has always been its casual, understated feel.

Singapore Restaurant

FOOD is one of the most important pastime in Singapore, yet easily available and very reasonable. Common folks eat at open air eateries called "hawker centres" or in the air-conditioned version called "food courts". Food courts are pretty much franchised affairs and there is little distinction. Hawker centres however are very local and provide great value for money. A newly introduced rating system helps the novice to choose from thousand of booth offers. Go for the one having a B at minimum, and shoot for A. This is not the type of hepatitis you are going to buy but the quality of the kitchen during the yearly inspection. Avoid C as much as you can, or you will remember it. Otherwise, find a store with a really long queue and you wouldn't be too far wrong.

Some great hawker places:

  • Newton Hawker Center
The ubiquitous tourist trap, but you have to go and just say you have been there. Although this is where I saw the biggest tiger prawn in the city, and the most expensive, they are so massive, they look like mini lobsters.

  • La Pau Sat Hawker Center
Probably the oldest and the most beautiful hawker center in town. But what's really famous is the adjacent street where street vendors sell amazing satays and stingrays from 7-11PM.

  • Chinatown Complex Food Centre
Located right in the heart of Chinatown, this hawker centre is a favorite of the locals. Yes it is very crowded at lunch time, but there is simply no better place to check out authentic local cuisine than this place. There are plenty of food stalls and booths to try, everything from a Char Kway Teow (local fried noodle) to Ice Kachang (a popular local ice dessert).

  • Alexandra Village
This is the closest hawker centre to "IKEA, Alexandra Road" or "Alexandra Village Hawker Centre". It is a huge IKEA next to it also where the Swedish meatballs are really good too

  • Crystal Jade (Not a hawker centre)
This is a great chain of shops that sell Dim Sum. The one at Holland Village is 24 hours and it’s really good for food at 4 AM on your way back home.

Here is a list of dining Precincts

Alfresco diners and tourists alike will be drawn by the sea-breeze, the sound of waves lapping against the sea wall, and the stunning backdrop of Singapore's skyline at Raffles Place.

What to eat
  • Chicken Rice
Voted the national dish of Singapore. It’s literally chicken and rice but done in a really fragrant way. BTW, Singaporeans love chicken legs; breast meat is not that big a thing in Asia, though because of the way chicken in chicken rice is done, chicken breast is good too

Try any "boon Tiong Kee" store - just ask any Singaporean; he/she worth his salt should know or simply go to this place:

Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice Restaurant
    Name Of Business:
Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice Restaurant
    Enquiry Hotline:
    62556396
    Fax Number:
    62529858
    Business Address:
    275 Thomson Road #01-01 Novena Ville S 307645
  • Char Kway Teow
Dark noodles cooked with lots of lard
  • Others to try
Laksa: Spicy noodles - really yums
Roti Prata - flat fried Indian bread: watch the man flip the bread; accompany this with drink called Teh Tarik - basically Tarik means pull in Malay; and Teh means pull; so the man literally pulls the tea for you. Its quite common and you can see it around.
Bak Kut Teh - herbal pork soup
    Rojak - a mass of fruits (ege pineapples, apples), fried dough etc;
black pepper crab - you can get your fill of seafood at East Coast Park; order the "Sri Lankan" crab when you order the Black pepper crab and ask for "fried Man Tou" or fried bread to go with it - very local and very yummy.

Top 3 fruits

  • Durian
also known as "king of fruits" among the locals, this green thorny fruit is an absolute awfull though I know many people who tried it will challenge me on this; the key is to get past the pungent smell, which some have likened to a stinking drain (that is an apparent understatement) to sink your teeth into the soft, sweet yellow flesh and never have contact with the fruit. Nevermind, I don't like it still, but need to try, maybe in candy or ice cream instead.
  • Mangosteens
The counterpart of the durian, this "queen of fruits" is sweet and has what the Chinese term "colling" properties
  • Other tropical fruits
Rambutans, jackfruits, dragon fruits (BTW, it’s called papaya, not pawpaw in SEA)

Top 3 desserts / snacks

  • Nonya kuehs
Kueh are like little cakes; they are readily available from any "Bengawan Solo" shop which can you find at Holland Village
Must trys are: the 9-layered kueh (Gao Ting Kueh); Pandan cake, kueh lapis (this is what we eat during Chinese New year as well), "ang gu kueh"
  • Desserts at a Hawker Centre
Order "Cheng Ting" - actually anything at the stalls are great
common drinks in Singapore other than the fizzy sodas: "Barley", "sugarcane" or "Soybean" drinks - go for the freshly made ones
  • Other snacks
Muah Chee - its like sticky dough with sesame seeds on it
Popiah - vegetarian non-fried spring rollsBee Cham Kueh - peanut filled crispy pastry

Best must-try local seafood:
East Coast Seafood Centre to #01-08 Jumbo Seafood – the pepper crabs and drunken prawns are out of this world there. For other closer alternatives Newton food court centre – the most tourist-friendly food court in Singapore with a huge variety of local food but definitely not the cheapest.

Now after having done some very intensive research and many test sample here is the official Mintalo Best of Crab series ....

  • Best BLACK PEPPER CRAB in town
    Long Beach UDMC seafood restaurant
  • Best CHILI CRAB in town
    no Signboard Seafood
  • Best WHITE PEPPER CRAB in town
    Jumbo

And after this entire post if you still some more reference I recommend then to check out Chubby Hubby blog, source of some food fun and lovely dinner experience from a big Chubby Hubby Fan.

Singapore, Others

Singapore comprises of one main island and 63 offshore islands, just a small area of 697.1 km2.
Singaopre has 4 Seasons: Hot, Hotter, Wet and Wetter. For whose who are still have some difficulties with the late spring the lowest Temperature ever recorded was 20.5°C. But still import, sale and possession of chewing gum is banned unless prescribed as a medicine by an approved doctor.

The Favourite Pastime is EATING. 2nd Favourite Pastime - SHOPPING. 3rd Favourite Pastime - MOVIES. 4th Favourite Pastime - SMS.

True Singaporeans speak an additional language apart from English and their mother-tongue - it's called the SINGLISH. It's a mixed between Singapore and English. "lah" or "leh" is commonly attached to the back of the sentence eg "Don't be like that" in Queen's English = "Don't like that lah" in Singlish; or "Come on lah". We also like to mix Malay, Indian or Mandarin words into our everyday conversations. Eg "I blanjah you" = "Its my treat" or "Pek Chek" = a local dialect term meaning exasperated. "Cool lah?"

Singapore is a great place to be, do, see, dance, eat, run, shop, relax, sweet, walk, listen, ... and some of places are just listed below

Shopping time according to some people is the following:
-- For branded stuff – Takashimaya and Ngee Ann City on Orchard road and Paragon opposite it. 2nd Floor @Hilton Hotel.
-- For reasonable deals – ISETAN at Scotts Road, Robinson’s at CentrePoint, Raffles City Shopping Centre (above City Hall MRT), also try CityLink that connects the MRT station to Suntec City and the Esplanade, Suntec City’s shopping Centre, Holland Village.
-- IT things: If you do not know what you are looking for go to Funan Centre – six floors of reputable electronics shops. If you really know what you want, you can go to Sim Lim Square – but be careful. The vendors at Sim Lim are ruthless and will just as easily rip you off as give you a bargain.
-- Photographic equipment: Max Photo, 72 Pagoda Street, Chinatown, Tel. 62267226.
